Industrial by-product gypsum refers to by-products and residues generated through chemical reactions in industrial production processes. It is mainly composed of calcium sulfate, and is also known as chemical gypsum or industrial waste gypsum. Its resource utilization is no longer limited to traditional consumption as building materials. A multi-level, cascade high-value industrial chain for comprehensive utilization has gradually taken shape, steadily moving toward the goals of full-volume resource recovery and circular economy development.

Industrial By-product Gypsum Treatment Process

Taking FGD (flue gas desulfurization) gypsum as a typical mainstream variety, the mature and stable mainstream technology widely adopted in the industry is the two-step process. This process separates pre-drying and calcination into two independent stages, solving various problems caused by direct calcination of high-moisture raw materials.

Pre-drying

High-moisture FGD gypsum raw material undergoes rapid pre-drying in drying equipment. The main purpose is to remove most free water, preventing scaling and blockage in subsequent calcination equipment and ensuring smooth follow-up processes.

Calcination

The pre-dried material is sent to a calciner for further deep dehydration. During this process, dihydrate gypsum loses part of its crystal water and transforms into hydraulic hemihydrate gypsum, namely plaster of Paris.

Grinding and Modification

The original FGD gypsum has poor particle size distribution. Therefore, the calcined plaster must be milled (with a typical finished particle size of 560 μm) to optimize particle structure, stabilize product performance, and guarantee the strength and quality of downstream gypsum products.

Cooling and Aging

The grinding gypsum powder is cooled and homogenized through aging to stabilize its temperature and phase composition, before being conveyed to finished product silos for storage and later use.

Grinding Solution for Industrial By-product Gypsum
